WMS Pajama Party Mixed Media Card and Tag

It's been a dreary and rainy day, a perfect one for crafting. I have a couple of projects for you today that I made for the Waltzingmouse Pajama Party challenges. It's been a while since I participated in challenges just because. I miss that about my hobby. I think I will have to fix that right away :).

My first one is for the Thank You challenge 1. I first watercolored the background and stamped Penny Black's Text background over that. I stamped the tree from  Waltzingmouse's Blessed By You set  in Versafine. I then used DecoArt dimensional paste and Want2Scrap's stencil to add the brick on the bottom left. Some Want2Scrap corrugated cardboard anchor the sentiment, also from Blessed by You.
WMS-Thanks
I inked the corrugated cardboard with white craft ink. A button with burlap twine finish the card.

This next one is a tag for the WMS Tag, You're It Challenge. I heat embossed with white various images from a few WMS stamp sets: Blessed by You (tree, leaf on the pear), Peace and Plenty (pear), Fancy Flourishes (flourish) and Chicken Wire. I then blended Distress inks on the tag.
WMS-TAGb
The pear was fussy cut and paper pieced with vintage-looking patterned papers. I adhered a button with twine on the pear and some Want2Scrap bling on the bottom.

That's it for me today. I hope you're enjoying your weekend. By the way, I have a giveaway going on all weekend. More info on yesterday's post.

Watercolored Penny Black Poppies

I hope you're not tired of my watercolored/mixed media cards because I am really enjoying making them. Today's card uses Penny Black's Blooming Garden and Tweet Tweet stamp sets. I first stamped the poppies with water proof ink, Versafine. Then, I just colored the background with different water colors and blending them in some parts. After that dried, I stamped the sentiment.

Here's a close up of the poppies. I intentionally colored outside of the lines. Don't you just love that sentiment?

Clean and Simple Mixed Media Cards

I have two cards for you today that were inspired by this week's SCS Mixability Challenge not to use paper (except for the card base). Since I love to use patterned papers on my cards, this was a real challenge. I did manage to create these two clean and simple mixed media cards. They were both created using watercolor wash on the background. Basically, I just brushed watercolors on the paper with varying intensities for the ombre effect. I also did some masking on both cards.

For my first card, do you see that scalloped circle that acts as a base for my wreath? Can you guess what it is? It's not paper...it's vinyl wall covering. My parents had a sample book of different vinyl coverings that was about to be trashed, so I took it home. I knew I could use it in my paper crafting. I die cut one sample using Spellbinders Asian Motifs and a Circle die for the center. I used that circle to mask the center for my stamped image while I water colored the background. I stamped Penny Black's text background in a dark shade of blue after the watercolored paper dried. I then carefully placed actual wheat grains along the edge of the center of the die cut. While that's drying, I stamped my main image and sentiment (from Penny Black's ...Wishes set). I then adhered the wreath over that and added a bow.
With-Thanks
Don't you just love the different textures of these vinyl wall coverings? And the best part, they're die-cuttable!
Vinyl-Coverings
My second card is much simpler. I used a die cut (using my Silhouette Cameo) to mask my leaf before watercoloring. I stamped the leaf and sentiment from Penny Black's Foliage Fancy set, then finished it with a button with burlap twine.
Watercolor-leaf
I am really enjoying these watercolored backgrounds. They are so easy to do and economical. I'm using cheap old watercolors that my girls used for Art Class last year. Perhaps someday I'll invest in something better and I wonder how it will make a difference.

Mixed Media Birthday Card

Just a quick post for today. We are having bad weather here. The electricity and internet are off and on. However, I shouldn't complain. I'm sure you've heard of the recent typhoon that left Central Philippines in a devastated state. My heart aches for my people and my prayers are with them.

Seeing photos of the situation there really puts things in perspective. How many times have we been guilty of complaining on FB, our blogs, Twitter and other social media because of trivial things? I couldn't sleep last night as the wind howled and strong rains poured. But I was still enjoying the blessing of a warm house and clean bed, and my family are all safe and sound. So many Filipinos didn't have any of them the last few days. We have so much to be thankful for.

EDIT: If you would like to help with the relief efforts in the Philippines, I recommend doing it through Action International. I have friends who served with them. Action International provides relief through the local churches.

My card for today is something I shared on the Want2Scrap blog earlier. You can see the details HERE.

Finally, freedom is not free. Thank you, Veterans!

Moxie Fab Thanks to Cath Blog Hop

It is somewhat bittersweet to be a part of today's hop as I say thanks to Cath, the trendspotter-extraordinaire author of the Moxie Fab World blog, who will be passing the MFWB baton to another soon, while also celebrating her influence and inspiration to my paper crafting life. If you came from Pia's blog, then you're at the right spot. You can see the complete list on the Moxie Fab World blog or at Inlinkz.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I did a mini-tribute here on my blog to Cath where I posted a card inspired by one of her posts. Here's what I shared on that post:
One of my first paper crafting highlights was winning Moxie Fab World's Value of Vintage Challenge a few years ago. I had just started my paper crafting journey, so the win was a definite push to keep going with my hobby. I appreciate Cath's daily posts on the Moxie Fab World Blog that inspire creativity in my paper crafting.
I had the privilege to meet her and Susan in person at CHA 2010. It was a real treat for me. It was then when she asked me if I would be willing to share how I use paper crafting to reach out to women in my little Croatian community. I was delighted beyond words that she asked and especially when it went live on the Paper Crafts Connection blog.
Thank you, Cath, for everything, and best wishes to your next adventure! I thought as a tribute to you, I'd post my favorite Moxie Fab World-inspired cards today. You will surely be missed!

Mixed Media Poinsettia Card Tutorial

As promised, here is the tutorial for the Poinsettia card I shared earlier.

Supplies Used:
  • The Craft's Meow's Holiday Poinsettia and Inside Christmas stamp sets
  • Imagine Craft's/Tsukineko's Versafine Onyx Black, Versamark and Memento Love Letter inks
  • Ranger's Distress Inks in Worn Lipstick, Fired Brick, Evergreen Bough and Crushed Olive
  • Stampin' Up's Watercolor Pencils
  • Scrapbook Adhesives by3L EZ Runner
  • Want2Scrap Silver Rhinestones strip
  • Kraft A2 card base
  • 2 Patterned papers
  • Lace
  • Seam binding
  • Watercolor Brush
  • Blending sponges
  • White Embossing Powder
  • Heat Gun
Stamp image with waterproof ink.
Sponge different hues of red Distress Inks onto the image. Use the darker ink in the center.
Sponge Olive ink in the upper part of the background and Evergreen on the bottom background.
Highlight the shadows and lights on the image using watercolor pencils.
Highlight the poinsettia image with a dark brown watercolor pencil.
Color wash and blend the water color highlights using a brush.
Stamp image onto a patterned paper. Cut out a few of the petals and adhere onto the corresponding part of the watercolored image.
Heat emboss partially the image with white embossing powder. It's okay if it's not perfectly aligned. That way it creates a shadow effect.
Stamp sentiment inside box. Adhere patterned paper on the left side of the card base. Embellish the center of the flower with rhinestones.
Stitch top and bottom edges of the combined panels. Adhere lace, seam binding bow, white flourish sticker and rhinestones.
